The editorial challenge

The Voice UK is a hit reality singing competition built around a simple promise: vocal talent comes before a contestant’s look or image. Nowhere is that clearer than in the Blind Auditions, where artists perform to the backs of four superstar coaches. The swivel chairs and their buttons are the format’s key trigger devices—if no coach turns, the artist is eliminated—so every performance has to build towards that decisive moment.

02

Storytelling approach

The Blind Auditions are filmed as a multi-camera studio event, with as much editorial attention given to the coaches as to the performance. Because the coaches cannot see the artist, their expressions, conversations and hands hovering over the buttons become essential storytelling. I shape those reactions alongside the vocal performance, controlling pace, music and timing to create tension around who might turn and when.

03

Turnaround and workflow

Beyond the studio, the format invests heavily in each contestant’s journey. Master interviews provide the narrative spine, supported by polished hometown and backstage VTs, visits with family and friends, and carefully shot hero material. These elements establish where the contributor has come from, what the opportunity means to them and why the audience should feel emotionally invested before they step onto the stage.

04

Contribution

Across series 9 and 13, I edited multiple parts of the competition: Blind Auditions, Battles, Knockouts and contestant VTs played into the live shows. My role was to combine performance, reaction and personal story within the show’s highly stylised format, maintaining the pace and musical precision expected of prime-time entertainment while keeping each artist’s journey clear and emotionally engaging.
